The Stones of Bray cont'd

I am working on pencil drawings of particular stones that I have picked up Naylor's Cove.  I am thinking of how I might interpret them into print and painting.  I also have drawn versions of Oldhamia, the fossil found on Bray Head, which I have etched and put into printing.  I want to include ideas of how the geology around Bray was formed, the quartz-rock, the Cambrian shale and slates, the granite moraines, .  Furthermore I want to press the idea further looking at some of the manmade stones around Bray, the monuments, the ruined churches, ancient walls.  Keep in mind that I am in the beginning stages of this project, so I am taking a broad view right now, working my way through various media and thought processes too.

Stones of Bray cont'd

Bray Head was once the world's top attraction for geologists and fossil hunters, with the discovery of what was thought to be the oldest ever fossil, believed to represent the "Origin of Life".

Oldhamia radiata, is a trace fossil, i.e. a sedimentary structure resulting from the biological activity of an ancient organism. The fossils were discovered on Bray Head in 1844 by Thomas Oldham (1816-1878), Director of the Geological Survey, after whom they were named.

I am working on ways of  expressing aspects of geology such as Oldhamia through drawings and then etchings.  We will see where this leads me.

SIGNAL ARTS CENTRE BRAY CO WICKLOW

Today, January 13th, Signal Arts Centre, Bray received 10,000 euros grant from the Bray Town Council.  Kudos to the forward thinking of Bray Town Council.  Signal Arts Centre is a great amenity for the town.    The Board of Directors (unpaid volunteers and artists) of Signal Arts Centre are delighted to secure a permanent building for Signal Arts established for 20 years now as a non-profit artist-led centre in the town of Bray.  Check out Signal Arts Centre at  http://www.signalartscentre.ie/

The Stones of Bray

Have begun research on my new project tentatively under the umbrella of The Stones of Bray.
I am rereading The Stones of Bray written in 1913 by Canon George Scott (Repr. 1984) and also
Place, Art, and Self  by Yi-Fu Tuan (2004) to anchor myself in the relationship between geology (place) and art.
At the moment I am taking a broad view at all aspects of stones, rocks, natural and manmade in the vicinity of the Town of Bray, Co. Wicklow.  I will consider monuments, crosses, walls, as well as natural geology.
My first step is making drawings of some stones taken from Naylor's Cove, at the foot of Bray Head.  and also garnering some information/pictures on the discovery of the fossil Oldhamia, discovered by Thomas Oldham in 1844.
Taking the time to make the drawings is a start, a beginning, a direction, a lead in.
